Celebrating World Water Day 2023 – Accelerating Change

Back in 2015, the world committed to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) as part of the 2030 Agenda. It is the promise that ensures access to water and sanitation for all. We have only 7 years left to achieve the 2030 agenda and the current truth is that we are seriously off-track. If we want to reach SDG 6 on time, governments need to move on average four times faster than today. At Smartvatten we focus on water consumption in Real Estate and its potential to combat water scarcity.

It is time to accelerate change – to go beyond ‘business as usual’

On this year’s World Water Day, we reflect on the importance of water and what developments we need – not only to combat a rising water scarcity but to grant everyone access to clean water. At a time when water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource, it has never been more important to address water challenges and ensure the sustainable management of our water resources.

The impact of the blue planet

Water plays a vital role in every aspect of human life.  Sustainable water management decides if we reach not only SDG 6 for the 2030 Agenda, but also our aims concerning hunger, gender equity, health, education, livelihoods, sustainability, and ecosystems. Our economy depends on water for shipping, fishing, or cooling of production sites, access to water impacts the independency of women and water is the crucial factor in climate change, linking the climate system, societies, and the environment.

Poor water management can lead to increased competition and trigger water-related crises of various kinds.

Towards sustainable water management in real estate – or why data matter

According to the European Commission, buildings are responsible for about 40% of energy consumption in the EU. If we add to this the water consumption of households and the essential role of water in the construction, renovation, and management of Real Estate, addressing the use of water in the Real Estate sector is vital for accelerating change. But the truth is that we hardly know what is going on inside our buildings. Without this information, it becomes difficult to identify areas that require improvement and monitor progress. To address this challenge and tackle the global water crisis, data serves as a critical foundation for developing data-driven strategies to accelerate change.

Smartvatten’s Water Efficiency Service

At Smartvatten we want to take away the blindspot in buildings’ consumption data. We provide smart water solutions that measure and analyze water consumption data in real-time via main- and submeters in properties. We help our customers in real estate and water utilities to become water efficient, reach their ESG goals, and contribute to global sustainability goals.

But Smartvatten is not only monitoring and collecting data. With the data collected, we indicate any anomalies in the system resulting in a quick response to leaks and prevention of serious damage and waste of resources. Furthermore, we provide our customers with regular reports on their water consumption and calculate the corresponding CO2 emissions. Together with our customers, we put their consumption data to good use by developing a clear water management strategy to achieve the best water efficiency possible.

We at Smartvatten care deeply about the well-being of our blue planet. We truly believe that water-efficient managed buildings contribute greatly to solving the global water challenge. Therefore we work hard every day together with our customers to build an ecosystem made of cooperation, intelligence, technology, and services.
